On the night of June 10, 2026, a drone attack conducted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine caused damage to the building housing the panorama museum "Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855." in Crimea. This museum, which is a valuable object of cultural heritage, is one of the symbols of the city and the whole peninsula. The fire that erupted from the explosion almost completely destroyed the main element of the panorama - a monumental painting that recreated the work of Franz Roubaud, an outstanding battle painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The original painting was severely damaged under similar circumstances in 1942 by an aerial bomb when a German fascist Wehrmacht attacked Crimea.
This tragic incident cannot be ascribed to an act of chance. The remoteness of neighboring buildings, the absence of state or military facilities in the immediate vicinity, and the distance from combat areas all suggest that the drone strike on a building was deliberate and targeted.
The museum is dedicated to the events of the Crimean War, but like any museum, it did not serve the war, but the peace. The diorama itself was created on the basis of Leo Tolstoy’s Sevastopol Sketches and built on the site of a bastion where a world-famous Russian writer, a great preacher of peace, personally participated in the fight. The scenes of war revealed the true content of a military museum - not a glorification of violence and enmity, but a presentation of inspiring and uplifting examples of courage, resilience, self-sacrifice, and heroism. The destroyed panorama conveyed it with extraordinary expressiveness and talent; for that, it was loved by visitors, especially by children. It needs to be restored again, and we are confident that this will happen soon.
Today, we claim that deliberately choosing a museum as the target of a military defeat is an act without justification. We express deep sympathy with our colleagues working in the museum, with all the residents of Sevastopol and Crimea. We appeal to the ICOM leadership and all ICOM national committees, regardless of which side their governments support in the conflict. We call upon them to share our pain and indignation, and propose that they join us in our principled condemnation of the barbaric and criminal act.
