Online seminar “Museums and People in the Mobile World”

From November 16 to 19, 2020, the International online seminar “Museums and People in the Mobile World” was hosted on the ZOOM Platform.

The event was organized as a part of the project of the Russian Committee of the International Council of museums (ICOM of Russia) “Migrations: revealing the personal”, which is supported by the Presidential Grants Foundation. The seminar was held with the technical support of the Council for Digital Development of Museums under the ICOM Russia and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The experts from Russia, Brazil, Great Britain, Norway, Australia, Belgium, Canada, and Finland took part at the seminar. Over the course of four days, they discussed such important issues as migration and mobility, as well as the role of culture in including people with migration experience and building a dialogue between representatives of different communities.

Besides that, the experts discussed the use of migration topic in the Museum space. In particular, they spoke about the work of museums with personal stories, issues of identity, and perception of the other. The seminar also raised such topics as the creation of educational programs for the integration of refugees and discussed the successful experience of implementing projects on migration and mobility.

The workshop included a presentation of a collection of Museum practices and recommendations for working with migration, mobility, and diversity. The collection itself will be published on the ICOM Russia website in early December 2020.

Museum specialists also had the opportunity to take part in a workshop on cultural competencies. During this event, they got acquainted with models of socio-cultural competencies. The knowledge gained at the workshop will be useful for Museum practitioners to work with people with migration experience.

The last event of the seminar was the project design workshop. The event was held in the format of group discussions, during which participants shared their project ideas, discussed opportunities and necessary conditions for their implementation. With the help of moderators and experts, participants were able to look at their projects from a different angle, learn about the strengths and weaknesses of their ideas.

The event gathered more than 300 participants on ZOOM and in broadcasts on Youtube and Facebook. Recordings of all days of the seminar in English are available via the link.

We would like to thank all our colleagues, participants and partners for their help in organizing the event, as well as for their active feedback and lively participation in discussions!
